Base64 Encoder and Decoder

Base64 decode and encode text (including Tamil, Hindi and emoji), turn an image or file into Base64 or a data URI for HTML and CSS, and turn Base64 back into a downloadable file.

Base64

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent or stored.

How to use Base64 Encoder

  1. Choose "Text" to encode or decode text, or "File or image to Base64" to convert a file.

  2. Paste or type the text, or choose the file. The result appears at once.

  3. Copy the result, or download the decoded file if Base64 contained an image or PDF.

When to use Base64 Encoder

  • Embedding small images. Inline icons in HTML or CSS as data URIs.
  • APIs and JSON. Send binary data inside JSON or decode an API response.
  • Email and tokens. Read Base64 email attachments or JWT parts.

Limits and privacy

  • Files up to 10MB. Base64 is about a third larger than the original file.
  • URL-safe Base64 (with - and _) is supported for encoding and decoding.
  • Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent or stored.

Frequently asked questions

What is Base64?

Base64 is a way of writing any data, such as an image or a file, using only 64 safe characters: A to Z, a to z, 0 to 9, + and /. It lets binary data travel through systems that only handle text, such as JSON, email and URLs. The result is about 33% larger than the original.

How do I convert an image to Base64?

Open "File or image to Base64" and choose the image. You get the raw Base64, a data URI, a ready-made <img> tag and a CSS background rule, each with a Copy button. For web pages, inline only small images such as icons; large images are better as normal files.

Is Base64 encryption?

No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption: anyone can decode it instantly, including with this tool. Never use it to hide passwords or personal data. To protect a file, use real encryption, for example Protect PDF for PDF documents.
