How to use Excel to CSV

  1. Click "Choose a file" and pick an .xlsx, .xls or .xlsm workbook.

  2. Choose the sheet, the separator (comma, semicolon, tab or pipe) and whether to add the UTF-8 BOM.

  3. Click "Download this sheet as CSV", or "Download all sheets (ZIP)".

When to use Excel to CSV

  • Importing into other software. Tally, accounting tools, CRMs and e-commerce sites usually import CSV.
  • Bulk uploads. Product, student or employee lists for portals that only accept CSV.
  • Databases and code. CSV is the simplest format for developers and data tools.

Limits and privacy

  • Cells are exported as Excel displays them, so dates and formatted numbers look the same in the CSV. Formulas export their results, not the formulas.
  • One workbook at a time, up to 50MB. Password-protected workbooks cannot be read.
  • Files are read in your browser and never sent to a server. Nothing is stored after you close the page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert one sheet to CSV?

Choose the workbook, pick the sheet in the Sheet list, check the preview and click "Download this sheet as CSV". The file is named after the workbook and sheet. To convert every sheet, use "Download all sheets (ZIP)", which gives one CSV per sheet.

How do I keep Tamil text in CSV?

Keep "UTF-8 with BOM" ticked. The CSV is saved in UTF-8, which supports every language, and the BOM is a small marker that tells Excel to read it as UTF-8 when you open it again. Without it, Excel may show Tamil or Hindi text as strange symbols.

Can I convert .xls files?

Yes. Old .xls files (Excel 97-2003), modern .xlsx files and macro-enabled .xlsm files are all supported. Macros themselves are not run or exported; only the cell values are.

Is my file sent to a server?

No. The workbook is opened in your browser and the CSV is created on your device.
