GIF to WebP Converter

How to use GIF to WebP

  1. Leave "Keep animation" ticked (untick it to save only the first frame) and set the WebP quality.

Frequently asked questions

Does this keep GIF animation?

Yes. Each frame of the GIF is decoded, re-encoded as WebP and packed into an animated WebP file with the original frame timings and loop setting. If you only need a still image, untick "Keep animation" and only the first frame is saved.

How much smaller is WebP than GIF?

For animations with photos or gradients, animated WebP is often 50% or more smaller than the GIF, because GIF is limited to 256 colours and simple compression. For tiny GIFs with flat colours the saving can be small. The tool shows the before and after size of each file.

Do all browsers show animated WebP?

All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari (14 and later) play animated WebP. Some older apps, email programs and messaging apps still only animate GIFs, so keep the GIF if you need to send it there.

Can I convert many GIFs?

Yes. You can add up to 20 GIF files at a time, up to 25MB each. They are converted one after another, and you can download all the WebP files in one ZIP.
