Image DPI and Resolution Checker

Check image DPI and print size in seconds, and change the DPI to 300 (or any value) without touching the pixels, for forms, printers and print shops.

Your files are processed on your device and never sent to a server.

How to use Image DPI Checker

  1. Click "Choose images" and add up to 20 JPG or PNG files.

  2. Read the saved DPI, the pixel size and the largest print size at 300, 150 and 72 DPI.

  3. To change it, type the new DPI (for example 300), click "Set 300 DPI" and download the copy.

When to use Image DPI Checker

  • Forms that ask for 300 DPI. Some applications reject photos and scans whose files say 72 or 96 DPI.
  • Printing photos. See how large you can print before the photo looks soft.
  • Print shops and designers. Check that artwork has enough pixels for the print size.

DPI, pixels and print size

DPI (dots per inch) is a number stored in the file that tells a printer how many pixels to place in each inch. The real detail is the pixel count. A 1200 x 1800 pixel photo prints sharply at 4 x 6 inches at 300 DPI, whatever DPI value the file says.

Changing the DPI value does not add detail or change the file size. It only changes the print size the file suggests. To get more pixels, you need a better original; to get fewer, use the Image Resizer.

Limits and privacy

  • Up to 20 images at once, 25MB each. JPG, PNG.
  • Reads DPI from the JFIF and EXIF data of JPGs and the pHYs block of PNGs.
  • Changing DPI rewrites only the metadata. The image pixels and quality stay exactly the same.
  • Files are read in your browser and never sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check the DPI of an image?

Choose the image and the tool reads the DPI stored in the file and shows it next to the pixel size. If the file has no DPI saved, it says so; most apps then treat it as 72 or 96 DPI. On Windows you can also see it in File Properties > Details, but this tool also tells you the print size.

How do I change an image to 300 DPI?

Add the image, type 300 (or tap the 300 button) under "Change DPI", click "Set 300 DPI" and download the copy. The pixels are not changed, so the photo looks the same, but the file now tells printers and forms it is 300 DPI.

What DPI is needed for printing?

300 DPI is the usual target for sharp photo prints and documents viewed up close. 150 DPI is acceptable for posters and large prints viewed from a distance. 72 to 96 DPI is only for screens. The table shows how big your image can be printed at each level.

Does DPI affect file size?

No. The DPI is a single number in the file. Changing it from 72 to 300 does not change the number of pixels, so the file size stays the same. File size depends on the pixel dimensions and the compression.

What DPI do government forms need?

Most online forms specify pixels and KB (for example 200 x 230 pixels and under 50KB) rather than DPI. Some, especially for scanned documents, mention 200 or 300 DPI. Follow the notification; if it asks for a DPI value, set it here, and use the resizer and compressor for pixels and KB.
