Video to GIF Converter

This video to GIF converter turns a short clip from an MP4, WebM or MOV video into an animated GIF, or a much smaller animated WebP, with your choice of start and end time, width (320, 480 or 640 px) and frame rate.

Your file is processed in your browser and never sent to a server.

How to use Video to GIF

  1. Choose a video. It plays in the page so you can find the moment you want.

  2. Set the start and end time (up to 15 seconds), the width, frames per second and quality. The estimated size updates as you change them.

  3. Click "Convert", check the preview, then click "Download".

When to use Video to GIF

  • Reactions and memes. Turn a funny moment into a GIF for WhatsApp, Telegram or Discord.
  • Tutorials. Show a short screen recording in docs, emails or a GitHub README.
  • Product demos. A looping GIF of a feature for a website or presentation.

Keeping GIFs small

GIF is an old format that stores every frame with at most 256 colours, so GIFs are much larger than the video they come from. The settings with the biggest effect are clip length, width and frames per second: a 3-second clip at 320px and 10 fps is often under 1 MB, while 10 seconds at 640px can be 10 MB or more. For websites, choose animated WebP, which is usually 5 to 10 times smaller.

Limits and privacy

  • Videos up to 100MB (MP4, WebM, MOV); clips up to 15 seconds.
  • The video must play in your browser. Most MP4 (H.264) and WebM files do; some MOV and HEVC files from iPhones may not in Chrome or Firefox.
  • Sound is not included, because GIF and WebP animations have no audio.
  • Your file is processed in your browser and never sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a GIF from a video?

Choose your video, play it to the part you want and click "Use current time" for the start, then again for the end. Pick a width and frame rate, click "Convert to GIF" and download the result. Everything happens in your browser, so even private videos are safe.

Why is my GIF so large?

GIF stores each frame as a separate picture with a limited palette and no modern video compression. Size grows with width x height x number of frames. To make it smaller, shorten the clip, use 320 or 480 pixels width, choose 8 or 10 frames per second, or pick animated WebP. You can shrink an existing GIF further with GIF Compressor.

How long can the clip be?

Up to 15 seconds. Every frame is held in your browser's memory while the GIF is built, and longer GIFs quickly become too large to share, so this limit keeps conversions fast and reliable. For longer clips, keep them as video, which is far smaller.

Is my video sent to a server?

No. The video is read and converted entirely by your browser on your device. It is never sent to BA Convert or anyone else.
