Compress PDF to 1MB

Compress PDF to 1MB for email attachments and HR portals: large reports and scans shrink below 1MB while photos and charts stay sharp.

Your files are processed on your device and never sent to a server.

How to use Compress PDF to 1 MB

  1. Click "Choose a PDF" and pick your file. The target is already set to 1 MB; change it if your portal gives a different limit.

  2. Tick "Convert images to grayscale" for scanned black-and-white documents, then click "Compress PDF".

  3. Check the green "Under 1 MB" message and the new size, then click "Download compressed PDF".

When to use Compress PDF to 1 MB

  • HR and onboarding portals. Offer letters, relieving letters and payslips often must be under 1MB.
  • Email. Smaller attachments send faster and do not fill the recipient's mailbox.
  • Insurance and loan claims. Hospital bills and reports for online claim forms.

What fits in 1MB

1MB holds a lot: a 20 to 30 page scanned document in grayscale, or a long digital report with charts and photos in colour. Most PDFs only need light image compression to get under 1MB, so quality stays high.

If the PDF will not go under 1 MB

  • Split it: use Split PDF to upload the pages as separate files, or remove pages the form does not need.
  • Rescan at a lower resolution: 150 DPI in grayscale is enough for most text documents.
  • Photograph each page and use JPG to PDF with a maximum PDF size, which handles phone photos well.
  • Use grayscale: colour scans of black-and-white pages are often three times larger than they need to be.

Limits and privacy

  • First the tool recompresses the images inside the PDF and keeps the text selectable. Only if that is not enough does it turn pages into images (you can switch this off).
  • Target: email attachments and HR portals that limit files to 1MB.
  • One PDF at a time, up to 200MB. Password-protected PDFs need to be unlocked first.
  • PDFs are processed in your browser with pdf-lib and pdf.js, which are served from this site. Your file is not sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a PDF to 1MB?

Choose your PDF; the target is preset to 1 MB. Click Compress PDF. The tool starts with gentle settings and only goes further if needed, so you get the best quality that fits under 1MB. Download it when the green message appears.

What if my PDF will not get that small?

Very long colour scans, such as 100-page documents, may still be larger than 1MB. Use grayscale, split the document into parts, or check whether the portal allows several uploads.

Will the text stay readable?

Yes. At 1MB text is almost always left untouched and images are only lightly recompressed. You should not see a difference at normal zoom.

Can I do this on my phone?

Yes. Choose the PDF in your phone browser, tap Compress PDF, and download the result. Larger files take a little longer on phones.

Is my PDF sent to a server?

No. Compression happens on your device. Nothing is sent to a server or stored.
