How to use Compress PDF to 500 KB
Click "Choose a PDF" and pick your file. The target is already set to 500 KB; change it if your portal gives a different limit.
Tick "Convert images to grayscale" for scanned black-and-white documents, then click "Compress PDF".
Check the green "Under 500 KB" message and the new size, then click "Download compressed PDF".
When to use Compress PDF to 500 KB
- University applications. Transcripts, degree certificates and recommendation letters for Indian and overseas universities.
- Visa applications. Bank statements, sponsorship letters and itineraries.
- Job applications. Resumes with photos and portfolio PDFs.
What fits in 500KB
At 500KB you can usually keep colour: a 5 to 10 page scanned document in colour at moderate quality, or dozens of pages of a digital PDF. Seals, signatures and photos stay recognisable, which matters for verification.
If the PDF will not go under 500 KB
- Split it: use Split PDF to upload the pages as separate files, or remove pages the form does not need.
- Rescan at a lower resolution: 150 DPI in grayscale is enough for most text documents.
- Photograph each page and use JPG to PDF with a maximum PDF size, which handles phone photos well.
- Use grayscale: colour scans of black-and-white pages are often three times larger than they need to be.
Limits and privacy
- First the tool recompresses the images inside the PDF and keeps the text selectable. Only if that is not enough does it turn pages into images (you can switch this off).
- Target: university and visa applications that commonly allow up to 500KB per document.
- One PDF at a time, up to 200MB. Password-protected PDFs need to be unlocked first.
- PDFs are processed in your browser with pdf-lib and pdf.js, which are served from this site. Your file is not sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress a PDF to 500KB?
Choose the PDF; the target is already 500 KB. Click Compress PDF and download when it says "Under 500 KB". Most documents only need their images recompressed, so text and layout stay exactly as they were.
What if my PDF will not get that small?
Very long scanned files may not fit. Use grayscale for pages without colour, remove pages that are not needed with Split PDF, or upload the document in two parts if the portal allows.
Will the text stay readable?
Yes. 500KB leaves plenty of room, and typed text in the PDF is left untouched. Only images are recompressed, at a quality where seals and signatures stay clear.
Can I do this on my phone?
Yes. Open the page on your phone, choose the PDF, tap Compress PDF and download. No app is needed.
Is my PDF sent to a server?
No. The PDF never leaves your device; compression happens in your browser.
