Word Document Statistics

Word count for DOCX files without opening Word: choose a document to see words, pages, characters, sentences, reading time, the most used words and the reading level.

Your files are processed on your device and never sent to a server.

How to use Word Doc Stats

  1. Click "Choose a document" and pick a .docx file.

  2. Read the statistics: words, pages, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, images and tables.

  3. Scroll down for reading time, reading level and the most used words. For pasted text, use the Word Counter instead.

When to use Word Doc Stats

  • Assignments with word limits. Check an essay or thesis chapter without opening Word.
  • Translation and writing quotes. Freelancers charge per word; get the count from the client's file.
  • Checking files on a phone. Phones often cannot show Word's statistics.

Limits and privacy

  • One document at a time, 50MB each. DOCX.
  • Only .docx files (Word 2007 and later). Old .doc files must be saved as .docx in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice first.
  • The page count shown is the one Word saved in the file; if it is missing, an estimate of about 500 words per page is used.
  • Documents are opened in your browser with JavaScript and never sent to a server. Nothing is kept after you close the page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count words in a Word file without Word?

Choose the .docx file on this page. The text is extracted in your browser and counted at once: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences and paragraphs. It works on phones and on computers without Microsoft Office.

Is the page count exact?

When Word saved the file, it stored its own page count, and that number is shown when present. If the file was made by another app that does not store it, the tool estimates pages at about 500 words each, which is typical for A4 at 12pt. The real count depends on fonts, spacing and pictures.

What is the difference from the word counter?

Word Doc Stats reads a .docx file you choose and also shows Word's saved page count, images and tables. The Word Counter is for text you type or paste, with live counts and social media limits. Use whichever matches what you have.

Is my file sent to a server?

No. The document is read in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
