How to use Favicon Generator
Click "Choose an image" (or drop a file). A square logo of at least 512 x 512 px gives the sharpest result.
Set padding and choose a transparent or coloured background, then click "Generate favicon package".
Check the browser-tab preview, then "Download all as ZIP" and paste the HTML code into your site's <head>.
When to use Favicon Generator
- New websites. Every site needs a favicon so it is easy to spot among open tabs and bookmarks.
- WordPress. Upload the 512 px PNG under Appearance > Customize > Site Identity, or add the files with the HTML code.
- Converting PNG to ICO. Some older systems and Windows shortcuts need a true .ico file, not a renamed PNG.
- Home-screen icons. The Apple touch icon and Android icons are used when visitors add your site to their phone home screen.
Limits and privacy
- One image at a time, 10MB each. PNG, JPG, WebP, SVG.
- favicon.ico contains 16, 32 and 48 px images (stored as PNG inside the ICO, which all modern browsers and Windows Vista onwards support).
- The package also includes favicon-16x16.png, favicon-32x32.png, apple-touch-icon.png (180 px), android-chrome-192x192.png, android-chrome-512x512.png and site.webmanifest.
- Non-square images are fitted inside the square, not stretched.
- Everything is generated in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a favicon be?
Browsers mainly use 16 x 16 and 32 x 32 pixels in tabs, and 48 x 48 for Windows shortcuts, which is why favicon.ico holds all three. Phones use larger icons: 180 x 180 for iPhone home screens and 192 and 512 pixels for Android. Start from a square image of 512 pixels or more and this tool makes all of them.
How do I add a favicon to my website?
Download the ZIP, upload all the files to the root folder of your website (the same folder as your home page), then paste the HTML code shown on this page into the <head> section of every page. On WordPress you can instead upload the 512 px PNG as the Site Icon in the Customizer.
How do I convert PNG to ICO?
Choose your PNG, click "Generate favicon package" and download favicon.ico from the list, or the whole ZIP. The ICO produced here is a real multi-size icon file, not a renamed PNG, so it works in browsers, Windows and older tools that require the .ico format.
Do I need apple-touch-icon?
It is strongly recommended. When someone adds your site to an iPhone or iPad home screen, iOS uses apple-touch-icon.png. Without it, iOS makes a blurry screenshot instead. The tool gives it a solid background because iOS shows transparent areas as black.
