How to Compress a Photo to 20KB for Online Forms

By Betsan · Updated 15 October 2026 · 3 min read

Exam and job portals often want a photo under 20 KB or 50 KB. A phone photo is 2 to 5 MB, so it has to be reduced around 100 times. Done in the right order, the face stays clear.

Open Compress Image to 20KB →Get a photo under 20KB for exam and bank forms. Free, files stay on your device.

Do it in this order

  1. Crop first. Keep just your face and shoulders, using Image Crop with a 3.5 : 4.5 ratio for passport-style photos.
  2. Resize to the pixel size the form asks for, for example 200 x 230 or 413 x 531. Fewer pixels is what makes 20 KB possible.
  3. Compress to the target. Open Compress Image to 20KB, choose the photo and download the result when it shows "Under 20 KB".

If the photo looks blurry

  • Check you cropped first: a whole room squeezed into 20 KB will look poor.
  • Use a plain background. Busy backgrounds take up bytes.
  • Try 50 KB if the form allows anything up to 50 KB.
  • Take the photo in daylight. Grainy, low-light photos compress badly.

Minimum sizes

Some forms also have a minimum, such as "10 to 20 KB". If your file is too small, the compressor can pad it to the minimum without changing how it looks.

Frequently asked questions

Can I compress a photo on my phone?

Yes. Open the page in your phone browser, choose the photo from your gallery, and download the result. No app is needed and the photo is not sent to a server.

What about the signature?

Use the Signature Resizer. It cleans the paper background to white and makes a small, sharp JPG within the KB range of the form.
