By Betsan · Updated 15 October 2026 · 4 min read

Indian passport and many visa forms use a 35 x 45 mm photo with a plain white background. You can make a correct photo at home with a phone camera and print 8 copies on one 4 x 6 inch sheet for a few rupees.

Open Passport Photo Maker →Make 35x45 mm and 2x2 inch photos and print sheets. Free, files stay on your device.

How to take the photo

  • Stand in front of a plain white or very light wall, with light falling evenly on your face.
  • Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression and both eyes open.
  • No cap, no dark glasses, no shadows on the face or the wall.
  • Ask someone else to take it from about 1.5 metres away, at eye level.

Make and print it

  1. Open the Passport Photo Maker and choose the photo.
  2. Fit your face inside the guide oval, keep "Make the background white" ticked, and click "Make passport photo".
  3. Download the file for online forms, or click "Make print sheet" for a 4 x 6 inch sheet of 8 photos.
  4. Print the sheet at a photo shop or on photo paper at 100% scale (not "fit to page").

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a photo for Passport Seva?

For most applications the photo is taken at the Passport Seva Kendra. Printed photos are still needed for some services, visa applications and other forms, so it is useful to have them ready.

Can I wear spectacles?

Rules differ by country. Many countries now ask you to remove glasses for passport photos. If you keep them, there must be no glare and the eyes must be clearly visible.
